Downton Abbey is a very popular PBS television series about early 20th century life in England which recently returned for its 4th season. There was a Facebook personality quiz making the rounds titled "Which Downton Abbey Character Are You?" My personality was revealed as Lady Sybil. My friends took delight in learning that they were Anna, or Mary, or one of the other multifaceted characters on this brilliant series.
In my work as a family law attorney and mediator, I am honored to help men and women of all types of personalities through some of the toughest times in their lives. Some clients are very low key, and want me to "run the show" for them. Others want to be involved in every aspect of decision making on their case. Either way, I take my cues from my client. Like the characters in Downton Abbey, some clients value tradition very highly. Some are social butterflies. Not every person is the same; not every case is the same. I have to adjust accordingly. The most important takeaway is that I must be on the same page with my client.
The same goes for anyone looking for a family attorney. Make sure you meet with the attorney to find out if you are a good match. You will be working with this person for at least the next several months to a year or more; you want to feel comfortable with him or her. Let the attorney know what your goal(s) are and how you want to proceed.
